Volunteer Expectations

Do you set the same expectations for servant leaders when you volunteer as opposed to an unpaid staff? Is there a way to empower them to operate the way staff would?

See them as staff, and treat them like staff.  The more you let them have buy-in, the more they will serve. 
Ask them questions constantly, even if you know the answer. Get them thinking of new ideas and allow yourself to be open to any changes that you think could work for your church or team.
 
Always have clear measurables because you can’t manage what you don’t measure
  1. When we get a different result than what we wanted, always assume we as leadership didn’t resource well first. 
  2. After asking, “Tell me why you think this is not working” acknowledge that you may not have resourced them with everything in the best way.
