Creating Community for Busy Teams

My team is clamoring for community, but I know they don’t have time for it. How do I help this?

It’s a tension many leaders feel—your team desires connection, but their schedules are maxed out. Between work, family, and ministry responsibilities, the idea of adding another recurring meeting can feel like just another burden.

Here’s the truth: community doesn’t have to be constant to be meaningful.

You don’t need to create a weekly or even monthly gathering to foster connection. Instead, try building a “team on-call” approach—a rhythm of meeting as needed. When the moment calls for it—whether it’s prepping for an upcoming series, planning a big event, or needing a creative boost—you pull the team together for a focused, meaningful time of collaboration.

These pop-up style meetings can be powerful. They allow you to gather around a purpose, encourage relational connection, and spark creativity—all without demanding a constant time commitment. The key is to keep them purposeful, flexible, and life-giving.

It’s also okay to lean into small moments of connection—grabbing coffee together, praying before a service, or celebrating a win after an event. Little moments of intentionality go a long way in building trust and team culture.

Remember: your people don’t necessarily need more meetings—they need meaningful moments. Lead with grace, flexibility, and creativity, and you’ll help your team find the community they’re craving, even in the middle of their busy lives.
